Stir and Roll Biscuits

This is the most versatile recipe that we use. Using this basic recipe from a very old "Betty Crocker" cookbook, you can make Sweet Biscuits, Dinner Biscuits or Herb Biscuits in a jiffy! This recipe makes 12-16 biscuits, depending on how thick you prefer.
You will need:
2 Cups Flour
3 Teaspoons Baking Powder
1/2 Teaspoon Salt
1/3 Cup Oil
2/3 Cups Milk
Combine the flour, baking powder and salt. Add the oil and milk and work the dough until it is well mixed. This dough can be taken by handfuls and flattened by hand or rolling pin on a piece of waxed paper. You may cut them with a biscuit cutter, or take them and shape them into balls. This is a very pliable dough. Preheat your oven to 450 degrees. Place biscuits on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake for 10-12 minutes. You can serve these with dinner or as a snack with a fruit jam.

For Sweet Biscuits:
Roll dough flat, sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar. Roll dough and cut into Sweet Rolls. Place them, touching against each other in a biscuit pan. Drizzle butter, Oil or margarine, over the top. Bake at 450 degrees, for 10 minutes. Turn pan around and cook for another 5 minutes. Take out, pull apart a little bit and cook for another 5 minutes. This makes a great dessert. Have it for breakfast with an egg. Serve with tea or coffee.

For An Herb Biscuit:
Before you add your liquids, sprinkle in some minced, flaked or chopped onion, garlic, sprinkle in parsley, basil...whatever herb combination you like. Add the liquids and bake the same as the basic recipe. This is a great biscuit with a piping hot beef stew or chicken soup. Add a garden salad and you have a delicious meal.

Other Ideas:
Use different flour! We have made them with white all purpose, whole wheat, a combination of white, wheat and rye...these are fun to experiment with! Have fun with them.
